Hey, lash boss! We know that being a lash technician is no walk in the park. Those long hours, bent over clients to perfect those lashes, can really mess with your back. Back and neck ache? Yeah, it's almost like an unofficial occupational hazard for us. But you don't have to suffer in silence. We've got some tips and tricks to help you keep your back in check and continue doing what you love.

😮‍💨The Realities of the Lash Tech Lifestyle

Let's break it down and understand why our backs take a hit:

😣Repetitive Moves: The lash extension game involves a whole lot of doing the same thing over and over. Reaching for those lashes or tilting your head to just the right angle – it's like a dance, but it can strain the same muscles and joints.

🛑Static Living: Standing or sitting for hours on end, barely moving – it’s a recipe for a ton of stuck tension in the body. Without proper movement, our muscles can become tight and turn into one big, unhappy mess.

⚠️Improper Lifting: Sometimes, we're playing the role of Hercules, lifting heavy chairs and lash beds. But if we don't do it right, we might add strain to our back. Proper lifting techniques–for example, using the strength of the hips instead of the arms–are key to avoiding back pain and injuries.

💺Getting Your Posture Strong

Let's talk posture. If you’re guilty of poor posture, you’re not alone. Here's how to ace the posture game:

  1. Equipment Essentials: First things first, get yourself an ergonomic chair that's adjustable. We're talking about a throne that's the right height, so your feet are flat on the ground, and your knees chill at a 90-degree angle. Lean back in it like you own the joint, and let your lower back embrace that backrest.
  2. Straight Back: You should be sitting with your back straight with its natural curve and your shoulders relaxed. Say no to hunching over or playing the leaning tower of Pisa. If you catch yourself in a weird position, do a quick posture check and give your back some love.
  3. Break It Up: Stand up and stretch every 30 minutes to relieve pressure on your back. Take a short walk around the room to get your blood flowing and loosen up your muscles.Use a timer to remind you to take breaks throughout the day.

🏃🏼Exercise Your Right to a Healthy Back

Exercise

As a lash tech, you spend a lot of time sitting and leaning forward. This can put a lot of strain on your back and neck, leading to soreness and pain. Incorporating physical activities into your routine can help relieve this pain, improve circulation in your body, and prevent stiffness.

🧘Yoga and Pilates, for example, can help improve flexibility and strengthen your core muscles. This can help improve your posture and reduce the strain on your back.

🏋️‍♀️Strength training exercises, such as weight lifting or resistance band exercises, can also be helpful. These exercises can help build muscle and improve overall strength, which can help support your back and reduce pain.

When incorporating physical activities, it's important to start slowly and gradually increase your intensity. If you experience any pain or discomfort, stop immediately and consult with a medical professional.

A few simple exercises you can do to strengthen or stretch the back:

  1. Cat-Cow Stretch: Pretend you're a cat, then a cow. Get on your hands and knees, arch your back like a cat, then dip your back down like a cow. Meow and moo optional.
  2. Superhero/ine Stretch: Lie face-down, arms and legs stretched out like you're flying. Lift your limbs off the ground, hold for a few seconds, and repeat. It's like a Marvel audition minus the tights.
  3. Knee to Chest Stretch: Lie on your back, bringing one knee towards your chest while keeping the other leg extended. This stretch helps to alleviate lower back tension and improve flexibility in the lower back and hip area.
  4. Thread the Needle: Begin on your hands and knees, then slide one arm under the other, lowering your shoulder to the ground. This stretch targets the upper back and shoulders, releasing tension.

💝Self-Care = Long Term Success

Self care

Remember, self-care is your ticket to a long and happy lash tech career.

👟The Right Shoes:Invest in comfy, supportive shoes. Leave those stylish but painful heels for nights out.

🧊Ice and Heat:If you feel tension creeping in, ice or heat can be your new BFF. Using an ice pack or warm compress, taking a hot bath, and so on can relieve stiffness and pain in your spine and neck.

👩🏽‍⚕️Seek Professional Help:Depending on the severity of your back soreness, consider seeking out a chiropractor, physical therapist, or an orthopedic specialist. Sometimes you just can’t go about it alone. A professional would be able to give you personalised advice for your condition.

In Conclusion

Good posture, fun exercises, and self-care are your ticket to a long and fulfilling career in the lash world. Your back literally supports you, so treat it right so you can stay doing what you love for years to come!
